¤ Mrinal Sen's Bhuvan Shome in Hindi became a trendsetter for low budget offbeat films.

¤ Shakti Samanta's Aradhana made Rajesh Khanna a superstar, and it also started the second phase of Kishore Kumar's film career. He became the voice of the youth.

¤ Death of actress Madhubala (February 22), actor Jagdish Sethi (June 12), film-maker Ardeshir Irani (October 14), S S Vasan and the first hero of Indian talkie Master Vitthal (Alam Ara).

¤ First Satyajit Ray retrospective held at the Cinematheque, Paris.

Anil Dhawan
Anil Dhawan debuted with Chetna in 1970. He attended FTII, Pune with Jaya Bhaduri. He played the central role in many off beat low and budget films.He is known for his roles in Piya Ka Ghar, Chetna, Annadata, Anokha Daan, Hawas etc. He acted in over 100 films. Director David Dhawan is his brother and actor Varun Dhawan is his nephew.

Rehana Sultan
Rehana is the only actress who won a National Award on her debut (Dastak). She was a FTII graduate. She is known for her bold roles which eventually got her typecast. A promising actor ended up getting B grade films' offers. She is remembered for her roles in Dastak, Chetna, Prem Parbat, Dil Ki Rahen etc. She married director B R Ishara.
