The government offers this award to the individuals for notable contributions to the promotion of the art of cinema. The recipients include the best film, story writer, director, photo editor, dialogue writer, photo dramatist, actor/actress, side actor/actress, photographer, composer, art director, sound man, singer, dance director, tuner, make-up man, manuscript, dialogue, documentary, short film and special award for juvenile artists. The best director is entitled to get ten thousand in cash, and the others get five thousand in cash. Every recipient gets a replica in addition to the cash money.

DadaSaheb Phalke Dadasaheb Phalke Award was introduced to the National Awards in 1969, the birth centenary year of the Father of the Indian Cinema, Dadasaheb Phalke. It was to commemorate his contribution to the development of Indian cinema, this is annually given for distinguished contribution to the medium, its growth and promotion.
