¤ Mrinal Sen's Bhuvan Shome in Hindi became a trendsetter for low budget offbeat films.

¤ Shakti Samanta's Aradhana made Rajesh Khanna a superstar, and it also started the second phase of Kishore Kumar's film career. He became the voice of the youth.

¤ Death of actress Madhubala (February 22), actor Jagdish Sethi (June 12), film-maker Ardeshir Irani (October 14), S S Vasan and the first hero of Indian talkie Master Vitthal (Alam Ara).

¤ First Satyajit Ray retrospective held at the Cinematheque, Paris.

Basu Chatterjee
Basu debuted with 1969s Sara Aakash. His films dealt with light-hearted stories of middle-class families often in urban settings, focusing on marital and love relationships. He's remembered for Chhoti Si Baat, Chitchor, Rajnigandha, Piya Ka Ghar, Khatta Meetha , Baton Baton Mein, Priyatama, Shaukeen etc. His TV series Byomkesh Bakshi and Rajni were very popular.
